Walking
around Naggar
Naggar is superbly situated for treks.
We are offering short excursions that can vary
in duration from one to five days. For most of
the treks we start straight from Naggar and return
by foot. However, for some we will have to retort
to short taxi rides. All the treks below have
a base camp from where luggage-less explorations
of what lies beyond can be launched. Staying in
one place for a few days allows everybody to relax
and enjoy the mountains without any tension created
by time- or weather-considerations.
We
can organize treks for groups and individual
travelers. We will provide all camping equipment,
horses and/or porters, cook and local guide.
The
mountain passes around the Kullu valley are
mostly between 3000 to 4000 m high and most
of the walking is done in altitudes below the
tree line. The forests in the area are still
untouched in many places (away from the settlements)
and the animal life is vibrant. Ancient temples
of pagan origin nestle in cool, narrow side
valleys, guarding a spring or a cave and invite
to rest in the shadow of big old trees. We will
visit villages well away from road connections
and go up to where the glaciers slowly ebb into
the forest or visit crystal clear lakes at the
edge of the ice fields that mark the beginning
of the higher altitudes. Hiking below the tree
line ensures that we will have great bonfires
in the evenings. Already after a few days in
the Himalayan forests we will all develop a
new sense for the miraculous nature that supports
us constantly from all sides. Trekking on these
altitudes is pleasant between April to June
and again after the monsoon from Mid-September
to Mid-November.
We
have a multitude of trekking options and the following
tours serve as examples of what can be done. However,
we can adjust the programs to suit your time and
interest. The Price is 45 Euro per person
and day.
Note:
All these treks are easy and can be done by anybody
with an average level of fitness.
Bijli
Mahadev
Bijli
Mahadev is a Shiva temple situated high above
the conjunction of the Kullu and the Parvati Valleys.
It offers superb views over the surrounding mountain
ranges and is an intense location especially during
thunderstorms. This trek involves only very little
climbing, following a small road through dense
forest and can be done by everybody. It is a camping
trip that can give a glimpse of what the Himalayas
are all about.
Deo
Tibba Base Camp
The
base camp of this cone-shaped 6000m-peak can be
reached in one day from Naggar. From our drop-off
point near Prini we will climb for five to six
hours before reaching the camp just below the
glacier. There are many possibilities of hiking
around the snowfields of its upper reaches. Crystals
can be found on the sides of the glacier.
Briku
Lake (4270 m)
This
small lake is fed from snowfields at an altitude
close to 4000m. However, the lake can still be
reached in a day's climb as we will start from
a drop-off point on the road to the Rohtang Pass.
The camp lies in a lush green meadow under ice-capped
ridges. The views across Manali, Solang and even
beyond Rohtang towards Zanskar are spectacular.
Khampari
Tibba
This
3.600m-high hill stands at the higher end of the
Kullu valley and seems like a balcony from which
to view the topography of the Kullu-Manali area.
The camp is reached after a five-hour walk from
the road's end. From here, one can see the whole
Parvati range, Deo Tibba, Chandrakhani Pass, Rohtang
Pass, Manali and Naggar as well as down the valley
towards Mandi. It is the first camp on the Naggar
to Daramshala - trek.
Solang
Valley
This
high altitude valley stretches up from Manali
and offers views of Rohtang Pass in close proximity
to the serious peaks of Lahaul. We will take a
jeep up to the end of the road and hike in one
day to the Base Camp at Dhundi. From there, an
easy hike will take us up to Beaskund, a lake
set amongst snow and ice at an altitude of 3600
m. This trek is open most of the year and takes
three to four days.
Krohl
The
area of Krohl is a mere 3-hour-walk uphill from
Naggar and a good camping spot with views across
sheer cliffs and to the other side of the Kullu
valley. The altitude is just below 3000m and makes
this place accessible throughout almost the whole
year.
