Ecological Gardening

Closely connected with overall health is the food that we eat here at Buddhasland. We have currently 15.000 square meters under cultivation. It is a lot of work throughout the whole year to keep the cycle of the field flowing using only natural means. We are looking into getting the produce certified as ecological according to EU-standards.

We are able to employ a Nepali family on the land and pay them from the income. The vegetables and salads are not only used in our own restaurant but also sold in markets at Kullu and Manali as well as distributed to local households. We have a large variety of salads and cabbages as well as beetroot, leek, fennel, radish and beans.

We are producing our own vermicompost and have also started seed production. A greenhouse is in operation as well. We're trying to find old, natural and robust seeds rather than using the streamlined, clinical seeds that come out of modern large-scale farming.

The herbal garden has been started and we are now in the process of establishing an economical way of drying and storing.

Volunteers are welcome! Please also check http://www.wwoof.org for details. We are very interested to have people visiting and contributing with their skill and knowledge in the spring and summer of 2005. It is of particular interest to find people able to teach ecology and organic farming, who can participate in the project. We are always open to inspiring ideas. We are also organizing seminars on ecological farming for local people in the valley.

In our agricultural project we are working closely together with a research project in biodynamic
farming. Together we organize teachings and seminars in this area for farmers, volunteers and tourists. Please visit our friends: www.sehyog.org
