lake.The following day we reach Dharamsala, residence

to receive his blessings during his public conferences.Your
choice will be either to stay longer there, either take
the way back to Delhi, either go to Kashmir ( See section

many old Buddhist monasteries can be visited in the
different valleys around.The main monasteries of Spiti
are Kei, Dhankar and Tabo.Kei Gompa is famous for its
collection of rare books and scriptures and for its
wall paintings. It is also a training center for lamas.

is at 3962 meters.Dhankar Gompa is famous for its collection
of “thangkas”, known to dispel the “bad
eye” and mental diseases.Tabo monastery besides its
beautiful location is often called “the Ajanta of Himalaya”.Around
the monasteries you will visit some of the old caves occupied
previously by monks doing retreats. The paintings and decorations
of this monastery are highly artistic and mystic. |

PLACES
OF INTEREST IN THE EAST DISTRICT OF SIKKIM
1. Samdrup
Darjay Choling Monastery. Salugara Monastery of Kalu Rinpoche.
2. Director of Handicraft & Handloom Instituted with the aim
of promoting and keeping alive the State's traditional arts
and craft, the Directorates of Handicrafts and Handloom is
a storehouse of handwoven woollen carpets with traditional
motifs, blankets, shawls in Lepcha weaves and exquisitely
carved wooden tables and many other souvenir gift items for
tourist to take.
3. Enchey Monastery An important seat of the Nyingma order,
the Enchey Monastery is built on the site blessed by Lama
Druptob Karpo, a tantric master known for his power of flying.
This 200 years old monastery has in its premises images of
gods, goddesses and other religious objects. Every year, around
January, "Chaam" or religious masked dance is performed with
great fanfare for two days. It is situated adjoining the Siniolchu
Tourist Lodge, 3 Kms. from Gangtok town.
4. Flower Festival is organized around the year at the Flower
Show Venue near the White Memorial Hall Complex, Gangtok.
Orchid Shows held during the spring tourist season is one
of the most popular shows organized in the State of Sikkim.
5. Do-drub Chorten (Stupa) The Do-drub Chorten or Stupa was
built by the Venerable Trulshi Rinpoche, head of the Nyingma
order of Tibetan Buddhism, in 1945. Inside the Stupa, there
are complete mandala set of Dorje Phurba (Vajra Kilaya Deity),
a set of Kangyur relics (Holy Books), complete 'Zung' (mantrass)
and other religious objects. Around the Chorten, which is
one of the most important Stupas in Sikkim, are 108 Mani Lagkhor
(Prayer Wheels). These Prayer Wheels are turned in clock-wise
direction by the devout Buddhist while chanting Chenrezik,
the Lord of Compassion. The Chorten is surrounding by Chorten
Lakahang and Guru Rinpoche (Guru Padmasambhava).
6. Namgyal Research of Tibetology (NRIT) The most prestigious
of its liking in India - this Buddhist Institute is a treasure
trove of vast collection or rare Lepcha, Tibetan, Chinese
and Sanskrit manuscripts, statues and rare 'Thankas: (tapestries
or paintings used in Buddhist liturgy) and has over 200 Buddhist
icons and other prized objects of art. Today, it is renowned
worldwide centre for study of Buddhist philosophy and religion.
7. Handicraft and Jewelers Shops Besides the Government Institute
of Cottage Industry, The Blue Sky Gift Shop (Ph. 23330) and
Mandala Handicrafts Centre (Ph. 226562) adjacent to the Tourism
Information Centre, Sikkim Art Emporium (Ph. 2 27106) at the
Metro Point and Snow-white on M.G. Marg (Road) all stock a
variety of Sikkimese Handicrafts. Traditional Sikkimese jewellery
can be bought from Ramchandra Jewellers (Ph. 222962) on the
Lal Bazaar Road. A variety of the famous "Dragon Sets" are
available here.
8. Tsuk-La-Khang Monastery This Monastery is located in the
Sikkim Chogyal (king)'s Palace premises near the Ridge in
Gangtok. It is two storied and was used during royal functions
like weddings and coronations. The Pang Labsol and the Losoong
festivals are celebrated in the ground adjacent to the Monastery
once every year with the performance of the Chaams or the
masked dances.
9. The Ipecac or Saramsa Garden This garden is located at
a distance of about 14 kms downhill from Gangtok, 2 kms from
Ranipool. The area covered by this garden is six acres. The
garden has been named so because of the plant Ipecac that
is grown here. Besides this plant, this garden also contains
a wide variety of other flora including numerous types of
Sikkim's exotic orchids, other tropical and temperate plants,
and medicinal plants. A large green house also accommodates
to take a taxi to reach this place. It is and excellent recreation
and picnic and leisure spot.
10. Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre About 45 minutes drive from
Gangtok, 24 kms away, is the Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre,
the seat of the Kagyu order, one of the 4 major Tibetan Buddhist
Sects. Since the late 1960s, after the arrival of His Holiness
the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa, the Centre houses some of the world's
most unique religious scriptures and religious rare objects.
Traditional in design, it is almost a replica of the original
Kagyu headquarters in Tibet. It has over 300 centers overseas.
11. Old Rumtek Monastery 2 kms from the New Rumtek Monastery
is old Rumtek Monastery which was built by the nine Karmapa
Wangchuk Dorje in 1703A.D. but was destroyed due to a fire
and reconstructed and again rebuilt in 1985 due to damaged
by earthquake, by then the Chogyal of Sikkim and renovations
by the Govt. of Sikkim has updated to the present state.
12. Martam Monastery:This monastery is situated 7 kms from
Rumtek.
13. Sang Monastery This monastery is situated 12 kms from
Rumtek and was built in 1912. 14. Jawaharlal Nehru Botanical
Garden Situated at an altitude ranging between 1800 meters
to 2200 meters. Established in the year 1987, it comprised
of virgin temperate forest of oaks and as many as 50 different
kinds of trees species.
15. Tsomgo Lake (12,210 ft.) It literally means the 'Source
of the Lake' in Bhutia language. Just about 40 kms away from
Gangtok, the capital of the State. This serene lake is situated
at an altitude of 3780 mtrs The lake is about 1 km long, oval
in shape, 15 mtrs deep and is considered sacred by the local
people. This placid lake remains frozen during the winter
months upto mid-May.
16. Fabong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary Famong Lho Wildlife Sanctuary
I located at a distance of 25 kms. from Gangtok and has an
area of 51.76 Sq. km. The main vegetation is oak, katus, kimbu,
champa and thick bamboo forests and ferns. The sanctuary is
also home to a large number of wild orchids, rhododendrons,
etc. The richly forested area is known to be home for various
species of wild animals and birds. This area, located close
to Gangtok, is being developed as a short trekking trail.
The best season is October and April. A Log House with two
rooms is available at Golitar and Tumin. Charges are Rs. 50/-
per head. Apart from this sanctuary, Shingba Rhododendron
Sanctuary, National Park there are others like Kyongnosia
Alpine Sanctuary, Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, Meanam Wildlife
Sanctuary and Khang-chen-Dzonga National Park. For permission

(Wildlife), Forest Secretariat, Deorali, Gangtok.
17. Himalayan Zoological Park 8 Kms. away from Gangtok is
the Himalayan Zoological Park which coves an area of 205 hectares.
This area is also known as Bulbulay. One can spot the Red
pandas, barking deer, spotted deer, and bears in a semi natural
habitat.
18. Sa-Ngor-chotshog Centre It is a Tibetan refugee monastic
institution established in 1961 by His Eminence Luding Khen
Rimpoche, Head of Ngorpa, sub-sect of the Sakya Order, with
the blessings of HH Sakya Rrizin and HH the Dalai Lama. This
is the only monastery of the Sakya Order of Tibetan Buddhism
in Sikkim. It is located on a beautiful hill top just 5 kms
away from Gangtok town. Zurmang Kagyud Monastery which is
located at Lingdum, East Sikkim is at a distance of about
20 kms from Gangtok. The present Gharwang Rinpoche is the
twelfth successive incarnation of the glorious emanation of
Zurmang Gharwang. A place worth visiting for its religious
and exquisite Tibetan architecture.
