News from the Kullu Valley, September 2005

Developments on the field:
Towards the end of August disagreements with some of our local partners in the village of Karjan surfaced and lead to the decision to quit the work in that village. The basic problem for some of the villagers was that, while organic production involves more work than conventional agriculture, it will be economically productive only in the long run. The expectations in terms of profit were too high and could not be met. Needless to say that organic gardening works best when done with an interest in the plants rather than an eye on the profit. Of course we are still convinced that organic agriculture will eventually be also financially worthwhile, but the market in India for such products is still small and expertise is little. We have therefore decided to shift our field from the village of Karjan up into a side-valley behind a small hamlet by the name of Soil. The area is smaller than the place we had before and should therefore be easier to manage and to control. The volunteering program will continue. We will work more closely which the research group www.sehyog.com which is based nearby and has many years of experience in organic gardening. Currently, we still have Alex from the UK here who is helping us shifting gear, and we’re expecting two volunteers from the US within the next few days.

After some discussions we have also decided to continue the English teaching program for village kids as we believe that, with access to education the new generation will be able to move on into a sustainable future.

Accommodation
As most of us are already living in the village of Naggar (5 km from Soil) we have decided to move the center here. Accommodation of all categories for visitors is available here. For volunteers we have simple rooms in Soil itself.

The Restaurant “Mother’s Finest”
We also had to shift the restaurant out from Karjan and plan to open on a new location in spring 2006. During the autumn season we will bake bread and cakes at our home and make special dinner/music-evenings weekly.

Treatments and Therapies
All courses for autumn will run at various locations across Naggar, depending on group size and other necessities. We are currently looking for a new center which we could use from spring 2006. The program for September is as follows:

Our Hindi teacher Anoop will have a new month-long course during October.
